A Comparative Study on Concerns and Prevalence of Depressive Symptoms by Gender during the COVID-19 Pandemic: Community Health Survey, 2020

Abstract
This study aims to investigate the differences in the concern and prevalence of depression symptoms due to COVID-19 in community-dwellers according to gender. This is a secondary data analysis study in which 12,342 residents living Jeollabuk-do from the 2020 Community Health Survey. Our findings showed that the most common type of COVID-19-related concerns was concern for infection of vulnerable family members, concerns for financial loss, concern for being criticized by others, concern for infection, concern about death, and the degree of concerns was significantly higher among women than men. The most common depression symptom was fatigue, followed by sleep disorder, loss of appetite/overeating, loss of interest in work, and depressive mood, and the prevalence of all nine depression symptoms was significantly higher among women than men. Therefore, it is required to pay more attention to women¡¯s concerns and depression and it is necessary to develop measures to actively intervene high levels of concerns and depression symptoms due to COVID-19.
